What is REGO?

What is REGO? Understanding the Green Energy Certification

In our ever-evolving world, the push towards renewable energy is stronger than ever. But how can we ensure that the electricity we use is truly green? Enter REGO, the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin. But what exactly is REGO, and how does it contribute to a sustainable future?

What is REGO?

REGO, or Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, is a certification system that provides proof that a certain amount of electricity was generated from renewable sources. Essentially, it’s a label that guarantees your energy is green. This system was introduced by the European Union to promote transparency in the energy market and encourage the use of renewable energy.

Every megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable sources, like wind, solar, or hydro, can be issued one REGO certificate. Energy suppliers can then purchase these certificates to match the amount of electricity they supply to their customers. This ensures that the electricity you use has been balanced out by an equivalent amount of renewable energy fed into the grid.

How Does REGO Work?

Think of REGO as a way to trace where your electricity comes from. While you can't directly control where the electricity powering your home or business comes from (since all electricity goes into a shared grid), REGO allows energy suppliers to prove that for every unit of electricity you use, an equivalent unit has been generated from renewable sources.

Here’s how it works in practice:

1. Renewable Energy Generation: A wind farm generates electricity.
2. REGO Certificate Issuance: For every MWh of electricity produced, a REGO certificate is issued.
3. Energy Supplier Purchase: An energy supplier purchases these REGO certificates.
4. Customer Assurance: The energy supplier uses these certificates to prove to their customers that the electricity they supply is matched by renewable energy.

Real-Life Examples

Many companies across Europe use REGO certificates to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. For instance, tech giant Google has committed to matching 100% of its global electricity use with renewable energy through the purchase of REGO and other similar certificates. In the UK, several energy providers, like Octopus Energy, use REGO certificates to assure their customers that their energy comes from renewable sources.

REGO and Our Self-Sustainable City Project

In our self-sustainable city project, REGO plays a crucial role in ensuring that the energy powering our homes and businesses is genuinely green. By sourcing electricity from suppliers who use REGO certificates, we guarantee that our community’s energy consumption is balanced by renewable energy generation. This not only helps us reduce our carbon footprint but also supports the wider adoption of renewable energy in the grid.

As we continue to build a city that harmonizes with nature, REGO certification is a key component of our energy strategy. It allows us to provide transparency and confidence to our residents, knowing that their energy choices contribute to a more sustainable future.
