So, What Are GMOs?


GMOs are plants, animals, or microorganisms whose genetic makeup has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. This is done to introduce new traits or enhance existing ones. For instance, scientists might modify a crop to be resistant to pests or to grow faster.

Why Modify Genetics?


The main reasons for genetic modification include increasing crop yields, enhancing nutritional content, and making plants resistant to pests, diseases, and environmental conditions. For example, Bt corn is a type of genetically modified corn that produces a protein toxic to certain pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.
