So, what exactly is Climate-Smart Agriculture? Simply put, CSA is an approach to farming that focuses on increasing agricultural productivity sustainably while building resilience to climate change. It also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions wherever possible. Think of it as farming that’s designed to work with nature rather than against it.

Breaking Down the Basics


CSA involves three key components:

1. Sustainable Productivity: This means growing more food without putting extra pressure on the environment. For example, using techniques like crop rotation and cover cropping helps keep the soil healthy, leading to better yields over time.

2. Adaptation: Agriculture must adapt to the changing climate. This could involve shifting planting schedules, using drought-resistant crops, or implementing water conservation practices to cope with unpredictable weather patterns.

3. Mitigation: This refers to reducing or capturing greenhouse gases. Farmers can do this by planting trees (which absorb carbon dioxide), using organic fertilizers instead of chemical ones, and practicing conservation tillage to keep carbon locked in the soil.
